LONDON - Một nghị viên gốc Việt Nam sẽ được Nữ Hoàng Anh trao tặng hiệp sĩ vào Mùa Hè 2006.
Ông Vũ Khánh Thành, nghị viên Hội Ðồng Thành Phố Hackney London và là giám đốc sáng lập và điều hành hội An Việt, qua sự đề cử của Thủ Tướng Anh Tony Blair, sẽ được phong Member of the Order of the British Empire, tức Hiệp Sĩ Ðế Chế Anh.
Theo tin đài BBC, ông Vũ Khánh Thành đã hoạt động tích cực trong việc giúp đỡ người tị nạn Việt Nam hội nhập một cách có ý thức và thành công vào xã hội Anh.
Ông cũng sẽ hoàn tất nhiệm kỳ 4 năm tại hội đồng thành phố Hackney vào Tháng Năm năm 2006.
Ông Thành là người Việt Nam đầu tiên đắc cử nghị viên tại Anh Quốc cũng như trên toàn Châu Âu.
Sinh năm 1944 tại Nam Ðịnh, trước khi cùng gia đình di cư vào Sài Gòn, ông Vũ Khánh Thành từng là một giáo viên trung học ở Sài Gòn và Biên Hòa trong những năm 1963-1976. Ông cũng là một nghị viên của Hội Ðồng Tỉnh Biên Hòa nhiệm kỳ 1970-1974.
Sau ngày 30 Tháng Tư ông không còn được tiếp tục nghề dạy học và phải tự mưu sinh bằng nhiều công việc khác nhau.
Cuối thập niên 1970, ông vượt biên và được một tàu Anh cứu vớt. Sau đó ông được nhận vào làm việc cho Chương Trình Tị Nạn thuộc Bộ Nội Vụ Anh Quốc mang tên là British Council to Aid for Refugee (BCAR) đón nhận 20 ngàn người Việt đến định cư tại Anh Quốc từ Hồng Kông.
Năm 2002 ông đắc cử Nghị Viên Thành Phố Hackney London.
Hiện ông đang sống tại London với vợ và 3 người con đều đã trưởng thành.

Prof Duc Truong Pham, OBE the Director of the MEC has recently received the Freedom of the City of London , so he has now been granted he privilege to drive his sheep across London Bridge and trade within the walls of the City.
When Professor Pham received this accolade on April 8th at a ceremony held within the Chamberlain’s Court in Guildhall, he was the first person from Vietnam to be so honoured. The award was made in recognition of his remarkable academic record, his vision in creating and building the MEC which is an acclaimed centre of excellence, and a proven record for bringing academia and industry together in lasting and productive partnerships.
The MEC was founded in 1996 with only 6 members of staff. Today it boasts £9M of investment into state of the art equipment housed in laboratories sponsored by Mitutoyo and Siemens and now calls on the
expertise of 80 skilled personnel. The MEC has completed over 1500 projects for 300 companies since 1996.
In 1999 the MEC was awarded the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry’s First Prize for University-Industry partnership in research.
This was followed in 2000 by the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for higher and further education which recognised the Centre’s “exceptional programme of support for firms providing first-class research and practical technology transfer.”
In January 2003 Professor Pham was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours list “for services to engineering”.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by George V. The Order includes five classes in civil and military divisions, in decreasing order of seniority:
Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE)
Commander (CBE)
Officer (OBE)
Member (MBE)
Only the two highest ranks entail admission into knighthood.
